Ladies of Comic Con Reveal Their Favourite Festival Moments

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

It’s official: Ladies love getting their geek on at Comic-Con.

Even though it’s been perceived in the past as a “fanboys only” festival, some of Hollywood’s hottest actresses are embracing it as their own as they meet their most passionate audience. Some even want to sneak around in costume!

New Moon star Kristen Stewart – this year’s “Con Queen” – had several thousand devoted Twilighters flocking to San Diego to catch a sneak peak of her film’s footage and see her and her costars.

“This is definitely a high,” said Stewart. “It’s a little overwhelming to have so many people here, but I guess that’s a good thing. Just judging from past experiences – when I show up at these sort of places, I’m sort of blown away and in this case I was ready for it.”

Ready or not, the fanaticism can be contagious. “Certainly there is a major geek within me, actually, just kind of right on the surface,” laughed Scarlett Johansson, who wore exotic Christian Louboutin heels she called her “super-hero booties” while promoting Iron Man 2. “I have never experienced anything like this before, two weeks after filming has wrapped. It’s exciting to be a part of something that kind of has this built-in fan base that’s got this electricity around it.”

Cameron Diaz meanwhile got to mix and mingle with the crowd while promoting her horror film The Box. “My favorite part so far has been the signing of all the posters for the fans that came through,” Diaz told PEOPLE. “Everyone is so kind and so generous. It’s nice to be around people who are really positive and excited about the filmmaking process.”

Kristen Bell – a Comic-Con favorite thanks to her geek-chic roles in Heroes and the film Fanboys – agrees! “There are so many cool people here,” she said. “I mean, Johnny Depp was here, the whole cast of Twilight, who are like The Beatles. You can’t even think when they come in the room!”

Adds Bell, “I think the actual sort of pop culture Los Angeles is starting to catch on about how important Comic-Con is and how these are the opinionated audience members. “They’ll say their opinions no matter what they are.”

“When these fans find something they love they really stick with it through and through,” Ghost Whisperer star Jennifer Love Hewitt told PEOPLE. “They remember more about the show than we do. They’re like ‘Do you remember that one episode where you brushed your teeth and it was with Colgate and the green toothbrush and your hair was up?’ And you’re like, ‘Um, no, but thank you!’ They’re very passionate and I love that.”

Costume Party
First timer Audrina Patridge says she loves the fans who don constumes. “I first heard about Comic-Con from watching Entourage a couple of years ago but I’ve never been,” Patridge said of her trip to San Diego to tell fans about her latest acting gig in Sorority Row. “I mean, there are so many comic fans and people dressing up on the street!”

“I just love that there are so many people in costumes,” agreed Zombieland’s Emma Stone. “I haven’t been on the floor yet. I’ve just seen them walking around. I haven’t gotten to see the true diehards yet. I can’t wait to see all the homemade costumes.”

Some of the ladies are even considering joining the fans in costume and checking out the scene incognito. Patridge wants to go undercover as Star Wars’ Princess Leia, while Bell would love to be Chewbacca – even though she may be a bit height-challenged to become a Wookiee. “Maybe I could just have a hole in the bellybutton that I could see out of,” she laughed. “I could make it work.”

“I would be Wonder Woman!” exclaimed Hewitt, while Stone mulled over an equally sexy alter ego: “Jessica Rabbit? Would that be crazy? I think that would be a little too crazy for the Comic-Con floor.”

But maybe the costume isn’t the key. A year ago self-proclaimed nerd Megan Fox wandered through the convention center without any disguise, simply wearing jeans and a Star Wars T-shirt and went “totally” unrecognized. Could she pull it off again? “If I was dressed like that and I kept my head down, sure, because I’m so short, people don’t notice,” Fox told PEOPLE.

SDCC ‘09: Astro Boy Panel

Friday, July 24th, 2009

From screenrant.com:

Just got done with the Astro Boy panel at the 2009 San Diego Comic-Con, and not surprisingly, the highlight of the show was actress Kristen Bell (Saving Sarah Marshall, Heroes) who was in attendance along with co-star Freddie Highmore, producer Maryann Garger and director David Bowers (Flushed Away) to promote
Astro Boy
.

The panel featured a few clips, a new trailer and covered everything from what kind of “Easter eggs” we can expect to see in this modern version of
Astro Boy
, to new talk of a Veronica Mars movie. Check it out:

Astro Boy
is of course a modern re-telling of the classic manga comic created by Osamu Tezuka in the 1950s. The character has appeared in two classic tv shows in the 60s and 80s and is still an enduring icon worldwide – especially in the Far East, where he is affectionately referred to as “The Japanese Mickey Mouse.”

So, the big question for
Astro Boy
director David Bowers was how to take on the challenge of making a “modern” film about such a revered classic character. Said Bower:

“I want people to look at this film and feel the same way people
in the 1950s
felt. I want them to love this character for the same reasons.”

Actor
Freddie Highmore
(
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Spiderwick Chronicles), was under a similar pressure as the voice of
Astro Boy
. He stated that while he did a little bit of research on the classic Tv/manga, for this modern retelling he wanted the character to be a creation of his own. Here’s what Highmore had to say about his approach to the role:

“Astro Boy is a human trapped in a robot’s body, and I think that’s something that people can relate to, trying to fit into society – or in Astro Boy’s case, fitting into a family.”

But let’s get to what we REALLY want to talk about:
Kristen Bell
. As usual, the lovely actress was witty and engaging, totally working the crowd of Comic-Con admirers. After a brief shoutout to Detroit, Bell talked a bit about her character, Cora, who is a new addition to the

Astro Boy
universe:

“She’s kinda sassy, kinda opinionated – she’s got a tough exterior and a soft interior. She’s fun, she’s wonderful.”

Of course
Kristen Bell
can’t make a public appearance without sparking talk about

Veronica Mars
, the role which helped launch her in the limelight. Fans of the show have been clamoring for a
Veronica Mars
feature film ever since the series ended in 2007. When asked whether the project is something she would still be interested in, said Bell:

“F-yes I’ll do a
Veronica Mars
movie! Provided I’m not over the hill – and let’s be honest it’s getting close. I know I look young and all…”

She’s joking there, but Bell did get serious and said that the only thing holding back the film is Warner Bros.’ fear that the project is no longer viable.
Veronica Mars
fans better start sending bags of Mars Bars to the WB if you want to get your movie.

The
Astro Boy
clips shown during the panel included a chase sequence, a small snippet from the climatic robot-on-robot throwdown and the premiere of the final trailer for the film. Some of the animation sequences weren’t quite finished, but all and all the movie looks like it will be good fun at the very least. Bowers also revealed that in addition to some voice work from stars like Nicholas Cage, Donald Sutherland and Nathan Lane, we can expect (voice) cameos from Bill Nighy, Charlize Theron, Matt Lucas (Little Britain USA) and (because no movie is really complete without him), Samuel L. Jackson.

And die hard fans of the original
Astro Boy
, never fear: there will be plenty of Easter eggs sprinkled throughout this film just for you guys, including appearances from some very familiar characters. Oh, and by the end of this film, you WILL be seeing
Astro Boy
in his classic (non) costume.

Astro Boy
opens on October 23, 2009.

Kristen Bell Still Wants to Appear on Gossip Girl

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

Kristen Bell has provided the voice of Gossip Girl since the beginning of the CW teen drama, and so far, she’s been doing a fabulous job meddling in the lives of our favorite Upper East Siders. In the future, however, the 29-year-old actress wants to step in front of the cameras —even just for a brief cameo.

“I want to make a cameo and shoot it right down the middle,” Bell said slyly with a wink and a smile Tuesday night as she was leaving Cosmopolitan magazine’s annual Fun Fearless Female dinner at the W Hotel in Los Angeles.

This isn’t the first time Bell has expressed her desire to appear on Gossip Girl. Evidently, she has been bugging executive producer Josh Schwartz to let her do a brief appearance since the beginning of the year.

“I’ve pitched [to] Josh Schwartz a couple of times for me to be on camera as a waitress or something but he wasn’t buying it. But hopefully he’ll change his mind in the future!” she said back in April.

Unfortunately, there has been no word on Schwartz’s response toward her request so it seems that Kristen Bell’s appearance is just gossip for now.

Prior to providing the voice of the seemingly omniscient Gossip Girl character, Bell became a household name for playing the titular character in the cult hit TV series Veronica Mars. She was then cast as Elle Bishop on NBC’s Heroes and appeared in films such as Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Serious Moonlight, and Fanboys.

Kristen Bell can next be seen starring in the romantic comedy When in Rome, in which she plays a young and successful real estate agent named Beth Harper who appears to be unlucky in love. But when she travels to Rome to visit her newlywed sister, she impulsively steals some coins from a reputed fountain of love, and is then aggressively pursued by a band of wannabe lovers. When in Rome, which also stars Josh Duhamel, will hit theaters on January 29, 2010.
